  • Remember well, a Christian, especially a Catholic, must be strong. I mean spiritual and moral strength. A follower of Christ should not be afraid. Christians should feel surrounded by and atmosphere of Providence that makes all things work out.
Pope St. John XXIII (1881-1963 A.D.)

  • I was visiting Perrysburg and needed to get to mass. This was the closest Catholic Church to where I was staying, and I saw it had good reviews and a mass that fit my schedule. When I first walked in to the 9:45 mass though, I thought I must have come to the wrong place, since it looked much more like my image of a Protestant megachurch than a Catholic church. There was a large rock band playing what sounded like Christian rock in the front to the left of the altar. Two large screens projected the lyrics to the music and then the readings. There were no kneelers. There were no missals. The feel was much more like a warehouse than a Catholic church--which did not fit my aesthetic expectations or preferences at all. However, the mass was packed, the community was vibrant, and the priest was a good and charismatic homilist who seemed orthodox enough. I was won over by the priest and the congregation, even if not by the aesthetics. I personally am a progressive person with very traditional liturgical sensibilities. This Church and congregation seemed like it was likely politically conservative in tenor, but with very non-traditional liturgical sensibilities. I think I would look for another parish if I moved to the area, but it was interesting and nice to visit.
